How IT Support Companies Charge For Their Services – Part 2 Of 2

Let's Talk

In our previous blog post, we delved into the fundamental choices businesses face regarding IT service models. Now, let’s address one of the most common questions from prospective clients: “What do you charge for your IT services?” In our last discussion, we explored the break-fix and managed IT models. Today, we’re shedding light on the actual fees associated with these services.

The price ranges provided here are industry averages derived from a recent survey conducted by Service Leadership, a reputable independent consulting firm specializing in IT services nationwide. This information aims to offer a general understanding of typical charges in the MSP (Managed Service Provider) and IT services realm, emphasizing the significant variations in service contracts that demand careful consideration before commitment.

It’s important to note that while the actual price is a factor, the focus should be on what you’re getting for your investment. Numerous IT firms may appear cost-effective initially, but hidden costs can outweigh the apparent savings. Understanding the nuances of service contracts is key to making an informed decision.

Hourly Break-Fix Fees: Most break-fix services charge between $150 and $250 per hour, with a one-hour minimum. Some providers offer discounts for pre-purchased blocks of hours. This model suits microbusinesses with straightforward IT needs, but it may not be ideal for growing businesses with more complex requirements.

Project Fees: For one-time projects, fees vary based on the outlined scope and project complexity. When seeking quotes, insist on a detailed scope of work defining success criteria. Establish a fixed budget and timeframe to align expectations and avoid unforeseen charges. A professional IT consultant should accurately assess your situation and provide a project quote that accounts for contingencies.

Additional Criteria to Consider:

  • Specify expectations in performance, workflow, costs, security, and access.
  • Insist on a fixed budget and timeframe to prevent unforeseen charges.

Managed IT Services: MSPs typically quote a monthly fee based on the number of devices, users, and locations. Fees per user range from $146.08 to $249.73 per month. Operationally mature MSPs may charge more due to their enhanced capabilities in cybersecurity, compliance services, CIO services, dedicated account management, and better financial controls.

Choosing an MSP involves balancing cost against the level of service provided. Lower-cost options may sacrifice critical services, while higher-cost providers often deliver superior operational maturity and comprehensive support.

To be clear, I’m not suggesting you have to pay top dollar to get competent IT services, but if an MSP is charging on the low end of $146.08 per employee or less, you have to question what they are NOT providing or NOT including to make their services so cheap. Often they are simply not providing the quality of service you would expect.
